The general response to the first Magic Mike trailer was that the fun parts of the movie were weighed down by the bummer subplot of Magic Mike (Channing Tatum) falling for a girl who doesn’t want him to strip. It’s clear that the studio took audiences’ disappointment into account, because the new trailer doesn’t bother with any of that emotional development.
Instead, we get to feast our eyes on the muscular, shirtless forms of Mike, The Kid (Alex Pettyfer), Big Dick Richie (Joe Manganiello), and the other dancers with laughable names. The eye candy more than makes up for the less-than-satisfying sneak peeks we’ve gotten before—we get a better sense of the strippers’ cheesy cop/soldier/average guy costumes, as well as their elaborate dance routines. We already knew it, but hot damn is Channing Tatum an incredible dancer!
Lest you think all we care about is naked men, we’re also glad to see characters other than Channing get some screen time. Since Alex is basically playing young Channing — or as he was known then, Chan Crawford — it’s encouraging that we see his first stumbles into the world of exotic dancing. Their bromance, from jumping off docks to sweatily embracing each other on the stage, will be the real heart of this movie. After all, you have to love a film that uses Rihanna‘s “We Found Love” in the trailer to underscore the emotional arc.
Magic Mike comes to theaters on June 29, 2012.
