With yesterday’s declaration that he believes same sex couples should have full marriage rights, President Obama set off a huge positive reaction in the celebrity opinion-o-sphere. Some thought it was great, while others thought it didn’t go far enough, but you can always count on America’s favorite lesbian Ellen DeGeneres to be grateful and encouraging towards whatever progress is made on the matter, no matter how small or symbolic.
Ellen addressed his statement on her talk show yesterday, calling it “an amazing day for our country.” “It takes a brave man to take a stand like this, especially in an election year,” she said, “so Mr. President, to you I say thank you very, very much.” It remains to be seen what kind of effect this stated opinion will have on Obama’s policies; he still says he wants to leave it up to the states to decide, as if the rights of a minority group are something that people should be able to vote up or down. But as someone who gets to appoint Supreme Court justices, it’s likely he’ll favor those who understand that state legislated discrimination is unconstitutional, which at the very least will create a progressive environment for marriage rights cases to be decided in.
