Variety reports that beloved ’90s “Shakespeare in high school” comedy 10 Things I Hate About You is getting a sequel, over a decade later. The good news is that writer-director Gil Junger is back — because, by his own confession, he’s still raking in the residuals from his 1999 film — but every detail about the casting and plot sounds utterly ludicrous. Let’s go through what we know.
It was inspired by suicide. The movie had its dark moments, from Bianca and Kat’s mother abandoning them to Kat’s confession that she slept with Joey when she was Bianca’s age. But that only scratches the surface compared to Junger’s inspiration for the quasi-sequel: He said he got the idea after coming across a stranger who had committed suicide on a “scenic outlook.” From there, he had his story.
“It is the story of two relatable, ordinary people with normal jobs and normal desires whose seemingly great lives have become unmanageable. Two people who go to the same place at the same time to end it… Their chance meeting is so awkward, so raw, and so funny, they postpone their intentions and go their separate ways.”
It’s unclear if Junger encountered the corpse or just the setting for the gruesome story he mentioned above, but he seems to have coped with it just fine.
It’s starring Hayley Atwell. The British actress, last seen in Captain America, plays a great mix of steely and sexy. I use those adjectives because that’s how I picture Julia Stiles‘ character Kat Stratford—but is Hayley playing an older Kat, or someone entirely different? There’s the obvious point that Hayley is British, but I’m not sure what to think when I consider the next point…
It’s called 10 Things I Hate About Life. Really, it sounds like he should just make this wholly different from 10 Things I Hate About You; the pseudo-connections are too vague and confusing. It’s like when Nia Vardalos followed up the success of My Big Fat Greek Wedding with My Life in Ruins and I Hate Valentine’s Day: I feel like those movies got less exposure because people weren’t sure if she were just playing Toula Portokalos over and over again.
But if it is tied to the original… can we get Mr. Stratford (Larry Miller)? His time on the ABC Family TV show — which also failed to resurrect the genius movie — was too short.
To express our displeasure and wariness over this sequel, here’s the 10 Things I Hate About You poem. Kat perfectly encapsulates why we’d probably go see the sequel anyway:
