Did we know that Michael Bay was making a pirate TV show for Starz? The news got announced today, and yet it completely fits him. Vulture reported on the press release from Starz, which describes the show, a Treasure Island prequel called Black Sail, as such:
The series will premiere in 2014 and follows a young John Silver when he joins the ranks of Captain Flint’s rollicking band of pirates as they head to a pirate enclave, a “debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality,” according to Starz.
Treasure Island, you’ll remember, is the classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, and (from what I remember reading it as a kid) relied mostly on suspense and atmosphere to tell the tale. Not ship-on-ship battles in the middle of the ocean where stunning maidens pop out of their corset tops and schooners go flying through the air thanks to gunpowder explosions. Or however I imagine Michael Bay’s Transformers-level of destruction as applied to a time when there weren’t machine guns and Decepticons to play with. And a new Victoria’s Secret model each week playing the token stowaway wench.
According to Wikipedia, Black Sail is not one of the pre-established prequels to Treasure Island, so it’s clear that this is Michael’s gig, probably very loosely using Stevenson’s mythology and then throwing all that out the window. Definitely not the kids’ novel you grew up with.
