I feel like Glee should nut up or shut up when it comes to the fates of its stars after graduation. In this week’s episode, Rachel choked at her NYATA audition, so it’s clear that even though she leaves McKinley High this May, Lea Michele will still be hanging around in Lima. Annoyingly, we’ve got similar deals going with Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer… but a quote from Jane Lynch makes it sound as if Dianna Agron will not be returning for season 4.
E! News chatted with Jane on the red carpet, and she let slip that she had recently shot her last scenes as Sue Sylvester interacting with head Cheerio Quinn Fabray:
“It caught me by surprise. It was kind of emotional doing my last scene with Dianna, and it really just caught me by surprise at how moving it was. She is just amazing and just a really nice person too. It was like saying goodbye to Dianna, which is a sad thing to do.”
S0 it was “like saying goodbye” or “actually saying goodbye”? That’s all we got, but I’d love to think it’s the latter. Quinn has had the most complete emotional arc this season — even if it was pushed along by Glee‘s indecipherable plotlines — what with changing her good-girl image, trying to get her baby Beth back, and winding up in a wheelchair with her ability to walk still uncertain. (Note the photo of her singing at prom.) Despite all this, she’s the Glee kid with the best chance of getting out of Lima.
And since Rachel and Finn are basically stuck as her New York City dreams were dashed, it’d be refreshing to see one of the stars actually say goodbye to high school. After all, as Jane said in the E! video, the four years she’d spent working with Dianna really paralleled the experience for high school teachers who do watch students move through their school while they stay put. The young actors on high-school TV shows should get closure, not stay on for three more seasons.
Of course, the blase way that Jane leaked this possible info — especially compared to her reticence about the actual season finale — might mean that it’s not a spoiler after all. Glee fan belovegronletlovein pointed out on Tumblr that Jane shooting her last scene with Quinn could mean that yes, Quinn is graduating, but she’ll still be back on the show next year visiting McKinley High.
Though Dianna is active on Twitter and Tumblr, she hasn’t yet addressed the rumors of her leaving. The season finale, “Goodbye,” airs May 22.
