This week’s episode of Glee was all about Kurt’s and Rachel’s NYATA auditions. It’s the biggest audition of.their.lives. All week Rachel has been avoiding milk and doorknobs in order to be in her best vocal shape for the audition. Kurt is practicing a Phantom of the Opera song complete with a stage full of lit candles and some smoke. Blaine loves it, but Kurt doesn’t think it’s perfect because he doesnt have cape sequins. He’s too predictable without them.
Rather than sequins, he decides to start over and pick something else. That’s probably a good idea because I don’t think any audition lets you put on a theatrical production with costumes and candle arrangements. Rachel hates that he isn’t singing something safe, and that he’s taking a risk. She’s singing “Don’t Rain on my Parade” because she’s been practicing it since she was two.
Rachel learns who the judge is, and it’s Whoopi Goldberg! Just kidding! It’s Whoopi playing a character who’s a NYATA alum and Broadway expert. While Rachel convinced Kurt to do the Phantom song, he changes his mind during the audition and sings “Not the Boy Next Door” from The Boy from Oz. He rocks it in  his shiny gold pants. It’s really fun to watch. Whoopi was impressed! She told Kurt she loved that he took a risk. Uh-oh. Sounds like she’s raining on Rachel’s parade.
When Rachel gets up to sing the song she’s been singing since  she was a baby, she messes up bad. She stops the song twice because she keeps forgetting the word. Whoopi tells her the audition is over and walks out of the room. Although I haven’t always like Rachel as a character, I have been rooting for her since the beginning to get out of Ohio and make it to New York. Now it seems not so likely, which also seems like a way to keep Lea Michele on the show for season four.
Rachel ends the episode by singing “Cry” by Kelly Clarkson. As someone who didn’t get to go to their dream college after high school and thought their life was over, it was a pretty emotional performance to watch. Hopefully we will learn more about Rachel’s future plans next week, but that doesn’t seem likely because next Tuesday is the prom episode, and the theme is dinosaurs.
