Last night, Warner Bros. released the third trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, after posting some interesting viral content to the official movie site, and just in time for Occupy Wall Street‘s May Day festivities today. I’m still convinced that Anne Hathaway‘s Catwoman character is meant to represent the 99%, railing against the injustices wrought by Gotham’s elite, including Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). But she’s not on the same level as Bane (Tom Hardy), who’s breaking convicts out of jail and having that epic fight with Batman that will leave the Caped Crusader… I’m not sure where it will leave him.
Speaking of Bane, it’s clear that they’ve done some sound editing to make sure you can hear Tom Hardy behind that gruesome mask. Still, it took me two listens to get his answer when some poor sap asks, “What are you?” Bane replies, “I’m Gotham’s reckoning.” And we definitely get a clear look at what he has planned: Building on how the Joker imprisoned citizens on two ships and gave them the means to destroy the other, Bane is going for a much larger-scale attack that will leave people a lot more isolated. In a stunning moment, we see what I think is the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges silently exploding.
I’m most interested in Catwoman’s impassioned speech to Batman: “You don’t owe these people anymore. You’ve given them everything.” You don’t know the half of it, sister.
Oh, and the Batmobile flies. Can July 20th get here faster?
