Snow White and the Huntsman is coming out in just over a month! And as its June 1st release date draws nigh, bits and pieces of the film are falling into place, the latest being an epic song by Florence and the Machine which I suspect will feature prominently on the soundtrack.
A natural extension of Florence and the Machine’s trademark dramatic style, “Breath of Life” features booming drums, a full orchestra, and a real chorus backing Florence up. As might be expected, Florence Welch drew much of her inspiration for it from Charlize Theron‘s evil Queen Ravenna, who is obviously going to be the best character in the film.
“The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside,” Welch told MTV News back in March. “She’s sort of eternal, but inside there’s nothing…[She has] this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she’s so beautiful, so it’s this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death.”
Does the song stand alone as a single? Not unless you’re really into soundtrack music. But as a grandiose statement underscoring the intense vibes of the film, it’s extremely effective. Let’s hope they use it to score a climactic scene instead of wasting it on the end credits.
