In Normal Hollywood News, Anne Hathaway Is Starving Herself For A Role

You know what would shock me? If I heard the news that a movie cast an actress because she was absolutely perfect for the role. No hair, weight, make-up or even wardrobe changes needed. Just a healthy dose of  ”you do you!”

You know what doesn’t shock me? Reading about Anne Hathaway being forced to go on a starvation diet to lose weight for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables.

In a Daily Mail story that involves using the phrase Anne Waste-Away in the title, they say Anne’s on an incredibly strict 500 calories per day diet.

It is believed that Anne has lost around 16lbs in just three weeks in preparation for the beginning of shooting. A source told the Daily Mail earlier this month:  ’Anne is playing a destitute factory worker-come-lady of the night.

‘Unfortunately, she only has 15 to 20 days to lose as much weight as possible – up to a stone-and-a-half – because she’s been filming the scenes showing her fit and healthy, almost slightly chubby.

‘It’s not ideal but, as with any high-budget movie, there are strict time constraints.

‘Producers have assigned her a personal trainer and she is literally eating nothing more than a couple of apples a day, and some protein – mainly in the form of a shake.’

Gaining and losing massive amounts of weight is pretty standard in Hollywood these days. In fact it’s so standard that major film critics criticized Jennifer Lawrence for looking too healthy in The Hunger Games. How could anyone believe that an actress with hips could pass as a starving teenager?

So actresses like Anne Hathaway do the “right” thing, lose shocking amounts of weight and look emaciated for their role — and still get slammed in the media as “Anne Waste-away.” You just can’t win in Hollywoodland.

Meaning we should all just agree that going forward celebrities should not have to lose weight for a role. That we’re all able to see past someone’s body and understand that just because someone’s playing a starving prostitute in a movie doesn’t mean she’s starving in real life. Her acting abilities should be able to speak to that experience more than her body shape.

Unless of course we want to continue seeing headlines like Anne Waste-Away. If that’s the case, then keep the 500-calorie restricted diets coming. I’m sure The Daily Mail has a few more clever puns like that all ready for the next revealing photo.

You know who looks like she’s having the time of her life on-set? Amanda Seyfried.

You know, I was so taken with Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in The Hunger Games that it didn’t even occur to me that …gee, she should look like she’s starving…Lawrence gave an amazing performance and that’s all there was to it. It’s not healthy, even dangerous to lose that much weight so quickly…in the words of Laurence Olivier (to Dustin Hoffman during the filming of Marathon Man, apparantly Hoffman was making himself sick and exhausted in the role) “Next time my boy, try ACTING”.

      And that’s “apparently” not “apparantly”.

PASSION AND DEDICATION TO THE CRAFT =ANNE HATHAWAY. First of all, Kudos to Jennifer Lawrence, but in the hunger games, they were already dressed up and “fixed” , fed in preparation for the hunger games, it’s a different thing with Anne Hathaway’s role as Fantine. If it’s pure acting then those who had portrayed as cancer patients in the movies should have not used make up to cover their hair. It takes a lot of courage for a person to loose weight and cut the BEAUTIFUL hair, that’s what Anne has that others may not have, PASSION and DEDICATION to the character she is portrating, she is such a wonderful actress and Hollywood is Blessed to have her.

It’s kind of disgusting that the producers of this film would even encourage her to starve herself let alone do it in such a short period of time. She’s certainly not overweight or chubby (which this Daily Mail “source” has the nerve to call her) in any regard. Not everyone who is destitute looks like a skeleton. She should have been able to play the part just as she was, especially if her acting skills met their expectations. Otherwise they could’ve just picked up any rail thin chick off the street to play the part. Or an actual “lady-of-the-night.”

And Jennifer Lawrence did a fine job in The Hunger Games. Her character *should* look like she is strong enough to hunt, climb trees, and outrun dangers lurking behind every tree.

I think they should have made jennifer lawrence lose weight for the hunger games. Say what you will, but the character needed to be thinner, less healthy looking. Jennifer looks amazing, but that is not how Katniss should look, or Fantine for that matter. If anne hathaway wants to play the part then she needs to lose the weight and the same thing should have been true for lawrence. It’s fine if they don’t want to do that to their body…. but it goes with the job. It’s their job to portray a character and they chose to take the job.

However good the acting is, the actor still needs to look the part. Otherwise you just can’t quite believe this person is who they’re meant to be.
I loved Jennifer Lawrence in the Hunger Games, but I do agree that she didn’t quite fit the part of the starving teenager.
In the case of Anne Hathaway, this is dedication to her art, and I have a lot of respect for that. This isn’t just some director saying, “You need to lose weight, because we need the sex appeal for the male demographic”, there is actually a reason why she needs to look this way that relates to the story.
