Courtney Love is one of those rare crazy people who is also kind of self-aware. For example, I’m pretty sure she knows that fans like me might stop defending her at parties if it weren’t for the fact that she wrote some great songs that were really important to us growing up, as well as the fact that she continues to exhibit the potential to write more (or at least perform the old ones). It was perhaps with this in mind that Courtney magically reunited the classic Hole line-up of Eric Erlandson, Patty Schemel, and Melissa Auf der Maur for the first time since 1999 over the weekend. No, really! Look, there’s video.
At a Williamsburg screening of the documentary Hit So Hard: The Life & Near Death Story of Patty Schemel, the band played a short surprise set of two songs: “Miss World” and their great Wipers cover, “Over The Edge.” Courtney hugged it out with her old band mates, promised to make a guest appearance on Portlandia if asked, and let loose that same old amazing voice we love. I think it’s safe to say everyone there was shitting their pants with excitement.
That same weekend, she also apologized to her daughter via Twitter for accusing her of sleeping with Dave Grohl:
I don’t know if Frances Bean forgives her for all the insanity she’s subjected her to over the years, but as far as her fans go, I think it’s clear that she knows just what to do to keep us from staying mad at her for long. Shall we dare to hope a real reunion is in the works?
