Last night’s 16 and Pregnant subject Lindsey Harrison kind of reminds me of the new generation of Degrassi kids compared to the old. Compared to past 16 and Pregnant stars who had more mainstream dreams of making the cheerleading squad or getting into college, Lindsey is like the cooler, newer model: She wants to be a cage fighter, model, and police detective. In some ways, then, it was even more difficult to watch her dreams go down the drain for a year when she got pregnant.
My sympathy for Lindsey vacillated a lot this episode. On the one hand, her boyfriend Forest was unwilling to man up and get a job, or even be there for her when she had premature contractions. But Lindsey also never considered abortion or adoption, and yet complained to everyone about being pregnant. She also got really defensive when her mother tried to talk to her about the sacrifices she’d have to make for her daughter.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Here are the five facts we learned about Lindsey from last night’s episode.
1. If anyone is ill-equipped to bring another baby into her life, it’s Lindsey. Not because she’s irresponsible, but because her house is too crammed already. She, her mom, and her younger sister live in a house so small that she and her sister have to share a bed. Plus, she has two older sisters who come to visit occasionally. But with that many people underfoot, the thought of another tiny body made us wince.
2. It’s not surprising that someone training to be a cage fighter would get a bit of an invincibility complex when it comes to her sexual health. Lindsey explained to her skeptical friends that for the most part she and Forest used condoms, “and then we didn’t.” She tried to defend herself with the logic that they’d done it once without protection and not gotten pregnant, so she somehow believed that it was a foolproof plan. Thankfully, her friends give her plenty of shit about it.
