Have you heard of Maxim Bady? If you’re the kind of person who reads the internet all day (hi), chances are you have, but you might know him better as the guy who wants to kill himself for not having as much swag as Yeezy. As far as I can tell, his video review of Kanye West‘s new song “Theraflu” is currently going viral because he 1.) says the things we were all thinking about the song already, 2.) in an amusingly excited way, 3.) with an amusingly foreign accent. I realize this is pretty un-P.C. of me to say, but pop culture commentary with a foreign accent > pop culture commentary without a foreign accent, forever and always.
Looking through Bady’s other videos, you can see him apply the same winning formula to topics like Kim Kardashian‘s flour bombing by PeTA, Nicki Minaj vs. Jay-Z, “how to smoke & sell marijuana legally,” and “why you should stop talking about your boyfriend.” But is he a real pop culture obsessed African guy, or just some guy from say, Chicago, who has adopted this persona in an attempt to make his jokes sound funnier?
An examination of the comments section reveals that he lives in the UK, as his use of “booyakasha” and references to something called “Lucozade” would imply. But that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. And “Maxim Bady” totally sounds like a made up name…but maybe it’s just the kind of made up name an African immigrant to the UK with a love of all things laddish would give himself? As with all Youtube stars since LonelyGirl15, I’m inherently distrustful of this delightful man, but that doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy him. I WANT TO BELIEVE.
