A video is quickly gathering eyeballs today for the way it combines two things the internet loves: virtuosity and dubstep. In it, a blind 15-year-old from Hawaii named Kuha’o plays a dubstep song on the piano after listening to it once, and the results are fairly amazing.
The actual piano playing starts around 5:30, if you’re impatient. But you should probably watch the whole thing if you don’t have to be anywhere. According to shadowy Youtube user surfwyoming5, 15-year-old pianist Kuha’o has been blind since birth and has been playing the piano since the age of 3. He can play pretty much anything after hearing it once. But can he play a dubstep song? The dude in the hat (presumably the same guy who uploaded the video) decided to see if he could play the song “Cracks” by the British electronica group Freestylers, and the kid passed with flying colors. He may even have succeeded at making dubstep listenable! Someone buy this kid a soda pop.
Beyond today’s viral explosion, there’s not much info on the net about this kid, but there’s at least one other video of him playing the piano, so I’m hoping it’s not a hoax. Please don’t be a hoax, Kuha’o. I want to believe.
