This morning, The Today Show debuted the first trailer for Sparkle, the movie that features Whitney Houston’s first acting performance in 16 years and sadly, also her last.
The film’s a 1976 remake that follows the story of Sparkle Williams (Jordin Sparks) as she struggles to balance her romance with her manager Stix (Derek Luke) with the pressures of trying to make it big in a motown-era singing group with her sisters. Whitney Houston plays the girls’ single mother Emma.
Considering that this is Whitney Houston’s final performance, the movie’s sure to be a huge success when it premieres this August. While it’s almost definite that the movie will open to big numbers in its first weekend, it’s not definite that Whitney will fully showcase her amazing talents in this film.
She’s received lots of praise for her performance in The Bodyguard, but that was almost 20 years ago when she was at the peak of her career. Sparkle captures her final years, when everyone acknowledges her incredible talents were compromised by her drug abuse.
Will this film be a fitting goodbye to the legendary diva or will it just remind us how much she struggled toward the end?
