On last night’s season premiere of 16 and Pregnant, we met the pregnant teen Mackenzie Douthit. She’s a 16-year-old high school cheerleader from Oklahoma who dreamed of going to college and cheering. Of course getting pregnant changed those dreams as well as her priorities. Instead of worrying about tumbling practice and school, she has to start preparing for her baby with her semi-supportive rodeo boyfriend Josh Mckee.
While at first the couple treat the pregnancy like a joke, you see them get a little more serious as Mackenize’s stomach gets a little bit bigger. And of course a lot more serious after their son is born and they both start having to make a lot more sacrifices. Josh has to consider giving up the rodeo and Mackenize has to consider giving up cheering.
Didn’t catch the episode? Don’t worry, we have the 5 facts you need to know about Mackenzie Douthit right here.
1. Ironically Mackenzie got pregnant because she didn’t want to gain weight from birth control. She tells her mom, the published author Angie Douhit, that she worried gaining weight would prevent her from cheering. Unfortunately it was ultimately her decision to not take birth control that led her to get pregnant that forced her to stop cheering. Life’s cruel like that sometimes.
2. Neither Mackenize’s parents nor Josh’s parents have the money to help them out with the baby. Although they’re supposed to find jobs before Mackenzie gives birth, they have little success. While Mackenzie gets turned down for being a pregnant 16-year-old, Josh barely even tries. Instead he rides in the rodeo to make some extra cash, even though it’s an incredibly dangerous sport and an unreliable source of income.
3. Josh gets in a car accident on the night he’s supposed to help Mackenzie find a daycare center for their bay. While she initially stresses that he’s not there to help, she panics when she finds out why. She rushes to the hospital and fears for Josh’s life as well as for her baby. She needs Josh’s help to raise him and if he’s paralyzed or worse dead, he won’t be much help. Thankfully Josh only experiences a minor injury and spends the rest of the episode wearing a neck brace.
4. Mackenzie gives birth to her son Gannon via c-section on September 12, 2011. Why c-Section? He weighed 9 pounds, 7 ounces, and measured 20 inches long. Way too big to come out naturally. He’s a completely healthy baby and you can see a more recent photo of him with Mackenize below.
