Not that you’d ever expect Lady Gaga to follow a trend, but the singer and fashion icon has followed in the footsteps of several celebrities by tweeting a photo of herself without makeup. She posted the photo at left to her Twitter account last night, with the caption Have a beautiful day!!
Her “little monsters” gushed over the candid photo, saying how beautiful and flawless she is. But my knee-jerk reaction was to wonder—what’s left for Gaga to “reveal” to us?
My early memories of the Gaga phenomenon is her wreathed in layers of thick makeup and complicated masks and veils. As we were introduced to her dance-beat music and impossibly creative style, her mystery was compounded by the fact that we’d never seen her real face. We knew she was Stefani Germanotta, but there was a disconnect between photos of that brunette NYU student and the person she had reinvented herself as in 2008.
When Gaga appeared on the German talk show Wetten Das…? in 2009 wearing no sunglasses/veil and conventional makeup, it was a revelation. We were so excited to see what she actually looked like—and especially because she was so lovely! It even started the thought that maybe she didn’t need all those elaborate masks. And while more often we’ve seen her face unobscured, she’s still continued to experiment with facial prosthetics and the like.
As Us Magazine points out, the makeup-less look reflects Gaga’s recent vow to stay under the radar. As she told Oprah on Oprah’s Next Chapter: Lady Gaga earlier this month, “Other than this interview, Oprah, I do not intend to speak to anyone for a very long time. The latest thing I do is I don’t read a damn thing. No press, no television, if my mom calls and says, ‘Did you hear about?’ I don’t want to know nothing about anything that is going on in relation to music. I shut it all off.”
Still, it’s safe to say that she won’t be appearing on the stage bare-faced. But all the same, what does she have left in her arsenal to shock us now? She’s stripped herself down to her base layer… unless, of course, she decides to emulate Heidi Klum‘s gruesome skin-and-muscles Halloween costume and strip away her epidermis. We wouldn’t put it past her.
