4 Reasons Why This Breaking Dawn, Part 2 Teaser Trailer Just Isn’t That Compelling

Kristen Stewart Bella Swan vampire Breaking Dawn Part 2 teaserThe first official teaser trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 is out today… and I really can’t muster up any enthusiasm about all 48 seconds of it. Sure, I was never a dedicated fan of the movies, but I still paid attention to the latest news and sneak peeks with some level of curiosity/eagerness. It just feels as if Twilight‘s time has passed and that this, the fourth film, will come out — November 16 — at a time long beyond its expiration date.

I’m not saying that Twilight is definitely over; the fanbase won’t abandon it after years of thoughtful fan fiction and dedicated tattoos. But the timing certainly feels awkward, for several reasons including the supernatural franchise’s new competitor and Bella’s unsatisfying transformation. I’ve outlined the major issues below.

The Hunger Games. The first Hunger Games trailer came out on opening night of Breaking Dawn, Part 1 last November, and it doesn’t seem like a coincidence that this teaser went online the Monday after the dystopian deathmatch film set box office records. It’s not as if YA franchises can’t survive alongside one another, but at the same time the world now knows what the fanbases already did: Katniss Everdeen is so much cooler than Bella Swan. Twilight‘s escapist fantasy doesn’t hold a candle to the love, gore, and social commentary of Suzanne Collins‘ books.

The wait between movies. Part 1 hit theaters on November 18, 2011, just about a year before Part 2‘s projected release date. That’s way too long to wait between movies! When the Harry Potter folks split Deathly Hallows into two films, the wait between November 2010 and July 2011 was just long enough to be deliciously torturous but not actually ridiculous.

Bella is a vampire now. Maybe it’s just me, but I find Bella Swan even less compelling now that she’s a perfect vampire. The formerly awkward, klutzy outcast has clear skin, piercing eyes, and super-speed and litheness. Making her even more of a Mary Sue is the fact that unlike other young vampires who are victim to their awful bloodlust, Bella adjusts to her new form just fine.

Jacob even says, “I didn’t expect you to be so… you.” Bella no longer has anything to fight against, and no conflicts to overcome. And before you try to challenge me with the 200+ pages that make up the second half of the Breaking Dawn book, may I remind you of…

The plot. Seriously—all that will happen in this movie is that the Volturi think that Renesmee is an “immortal child,” or a human child turned into a vampire, and then travel to Forks to kill this abomination. The Cullens and the Quileute wolf pack call upon all their foreign relatives to band against the Volturi, who make it to dreary Washington, realize that Renesmee is a hybrid, and literally say, “Oops, our bad!” They could’ve combined both movies into one and at least have achieved a film with a dramatic arc for Bella instead of awkwardly splitting it up in the middle and ensuring that nothing of consequence happens in either movie.

Anyway, here’s the trailer:

Agreed, I thought breaking dawn was awful hated the ending! I mean all they do is prepare for a battle that doesn’t happen while Bella does her safety stare or whatever her lame power was. Boo. I’ll still watch it tho.

I agree that the wait between BD 1 and BD 2 is too long and should follow the HP series with a July 2012 date just as they did for Eclipse. The wait is completely unnecessary and yes, will probably not pull the major crowd like the previous movies due to the long wait.

quite literally NOTHING happened in the book, and I don’t remember this ‘battle’ people keep getting excited about. The scene may have been exciting for some people, but that was only with the peek into Bella’s head. Visually, it will just be two groups of people in a standoff, and then the credits, because really, how cheesy will a narration sound?

Wow. That preview made me realize all over again what a completely screwed-up message the Twilight books are sending to girls…And yes, they definitely could have done the whole book in 1 movie so we could move on from this anti-feminist disaster.

Breaking Dawn was the only Twilight book I actually liked. It was refreshing to see this pathetic whiny girl turn into a confident dangerous killing machine. Too bad there wasn’t more killing though.

EXACTLY! As soon as I heard about the BD split, I thought, “Wow, that’s a TERRIBLE idea.” Stephenie could have cut 100 pages out of the book and nothing would have been lost.

I can’t say I was surprised, though. I knew when HP 7 was split into 2 that all the franchises from here on out would try that — more movies, more money!

BD 2 will be a snoozefest. The only thing that could make it remotely interesting (namely, the house-breaking vamp sex) can’t even be included because of the tween audience. A shame, since I really liked the book, too (right below New Moon on my list).
