Considering how many times she’s left the house in a sheer top and no bra, you’ve probably seen more of Rihanna than you want to by now. (Or maybe you’ve seen exactly as much of Rihanna as you want to see.) While many people probably wouldn’t question why they’re constantly given such a delightful show, on the off chance you’re interested, Rihanna has now told us why: because of her low self-esteem. Or her efforts to conquer it, rather.
In a recent interview with Women’s Fitness Magazine, RiRi had this to say about her adventures in nudity:
The more I got naked the more comfortable I felt. I just had to face my fear. You always find something wrong, you always find something you’re uncomfortable with, and one thing turns into another and you get embarrassed and self-conscious about it.
After a while, it was like, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ and I just started being a little more daring with it.
It was just knowing my body is the way it is no matter what that helped me, knowing that it is what it is under clothes or outside of clothes.
You know what? This actually sounds fairly reasonable to me. I mean, it’s a shame that she has body hang-ups in the first place–if Esquire‘s “Sexiest Woman Alive” has to deal with this shit, where does that leave the rest of us?–but I’m glad she’s handling it in a way that works for her. It also happens to work for her many leering fans and her career, which is convenient.
And of course, whenever you read a quote like this from Rihanna, you kind of have to give the side-eye to her dad, who seems to be responsible for a lot of her issues. If her quote annoyed you in any way, go right ahead and transfer that annoyance to him. We all agree he’s a huge jerk, right?
