In some ways, there’s major schadenfreude going on when I read that Friends with Kids star Chris O’Dowd called director Michael Bay an asshole. But in some ways, it also doesn’t really count because there’s no real consequence to him calling out Bay.
See, Chris has gotten to know Megan Fox through their work together on Judd Apatow‘s This Is Forty, and he obviously felt the need to defend his co-star. He spoke to IndieWire about Megan’s highly-publicized squabble with Bay, and he didn’t mince his words one bit.
“I don’t know the ins and outs of it but it’s all down to having a fallout with Michael Bay. But who wouldn’t have a fallout with him? It’s one of the sexist things [sic] I’ve ever seen. She called him an asshole. Well, he is a fucking asshole. She’s not the only one who has said that. Why has she been singled out?”
I’m sure that Megan appreciates her white knight, but Chris really had nothing to lose in saying that. It’s not as if he has an ironic cameo lined up in the next Transformers film. These two Hollywood folks come from opposite ends of the spectrum: Chris makes us laugh in witty, heartfelt roles, while Bay’s work is unintentionally hilarious.
As if you had any illusions about Chris’ possible collaborations with Bay, he adds, ”I would never fucking watch his films, never mind go and act in them.” Again, something that we figured goes without saying.
Now, if Megan Fox decided that she had a problem with Judd Apatow and Chris wanted to put his neck out and thus endanger a future job with a director in his actual field… then that would be truly impressive.
