Remember objectum sexuals? OS folks, or those who experience affection and sexual attraction to inanimate objects, were in the zeitgeist back in 2009. There were some documentaries floating around online about various women (I don’t remember any men) who had fallen in love with a fence, a carnival ride, and even the Eiffel Tower. This designation of sexual preference even made its way into a Nip/Tuck episode!
But after it seemed that OS true-life stories had faded away, dismissed as a fad, there’s a new crop of ‘em. A British morning show interviewed 27-year-old Amanda Whittaker, an OS who recently ended her ten-year relationship with her drum kit because “someone” else caught her eye: the Statue of Liberty. You can tell that the hosts are trying their best to take this seriously, even as they have difficulty talking about her “going to bed” with her drum kit as a young woman as well as referencing her new lover “Libby.”
She also spoke with the Sun about her unusual love affair. Here are a few choice quotes:
“She said: ‘She is my long-distance lover and I am blown away by how stunning she is.
… She even says she has thought about tying the knot with ‘Libby’ as she affectionately calls it but opted not to ‘because so many others love her too.’
…She has since visited the statue in person four times, where she admits to caressing it and leaning out of a window to kiss its hair.”
As you can see in the video above, to deal with not being with Libby, Amanda makes little replicas, including a torch with lights inside. A torch which looks disturbingly phallic…
