In the latest celebrity news that will in no way change your life or make a difference in your day-to-day decisions, you should know Liam Hemsworth is almost a foot taller than Josh Hutcherson. At 6’3 Liam Hemsworth could probably eat the 5’7 Josh Hutcherson for brunch. Or lunner, depending on what time he wakes up and how he feels mixing pancakes and co-stars after noon.
While logic tells me this has probably been the case for quite a few years now, I just noticed it in today’s TMZ article about The Hunger Games because it included a candid photo of the cast getting off a plane. While there have been tons of Hunger Games photoshoots in anticipation of the movie, they rarely show Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) standing next to Liam Hemsworth (Gale). Or if they do, they play all kinds of camera tricks to make it look like they’re more similarly sized, such as this one from Vanity Fair. Or this one from the cover of Entertainment Weekly.
However photos like the one from TMZ this morning as well this one from Pop Sugar show the truth when it comes to their respective heights. And tell you what, I’m okay with it. I’m totally cool with Josh Hutcherson being shorter than Liam Hemsworth because nowhere in The Hunger Games is height important. Speed and endurance and quick thinking all play a key role, but height not so much.
It does a disservice to short men everywhere when Hollywood pretends like height actually means something. Daniel Radcliffe’s 5’5 and that didn’t stop him from defeating the darkest of dark lords when he played Harry Potter — or from oversharing key information about his pubic hair preferences during an interview this year.
All this deception does is make us say “OMG I had no idea Ben Stiller was so short” when he presents an award next to a tall woman during an awards show. And then it just makes it stressful when we have to focus on their height discrepancy while also trying to catch the subtle jokes in their scripted banter.
So short men, stand tall and embrace your height. You too could one day play the lead role in a movie about child serial killers!
