In advance of The Hunger Games coming out on March 23rd, Lenny Kravitz – who plays Katniss’ ingenious stylist Cinna — appeared on Ellen DeGeneres‘ talk show. And what did he bring with him? Why, a never-before-seen clip of Cinna and Katniss! (Thanks to @Kathy_Chrz, via @TheHobOrg, for nabbing a video.)
Months after Lionsgate announced the unexpected casting choice of Lenny as Cinna, some fans still have misgivings about this rock star playing such a pivotal role in the story. But as someone who was dumbfounded at the first casting announcement, let me say that this clip alleviates a lot of my fears. It’s set during Katniss and Cinna’s first meeting, where he explains that it’s his job to make the tribute evoke whatever emotions are needed to reel in rich Capitol sponsors who will send him/her supplies during the Games.
It’s easy to see how Katniss comes to trust Cinna: He’s not gussied up in the ridiculous dyed skin and outlandish outfits of other Capitol citizens. All he has is that signature swipe of gold eyeliner; I love that the film kept that detail without making it look at all weird. (We probably have Johnny Depp‘s Jack Sparrow to thank for greater acceptance of men’s eye makeup in the movies.)
And here’s the clip of Lenny talking with Ellen. Who knew he was such a fantastic interviewee? He told silly stories about co-star Woody Harrelson trying on Lenny’s tour clothes while he rehearsed in his hotel room with the cast watching… and the deadpan way he says that he wants to work with Woody Allen was hilarious: “He needs to work with a black Jew.” Check it out below:
Can the movie come already?!
