Even though he’s now a bigshot TV star on a major network, Nathan Fillion doesn’t forget his roots: More than once he’s made our geek hearts flutter by slipping in Firefly references on his crime drama Castle. The best will always be when his character Rick Castle dressed up as a “space cowboy” — that is, in Malcolm Reynolds’ costume — on Halloween. But this news comes pretty damn close.
Nathan’s Firefly co-star Adam Baldwin, beloved by fans for playing dumb mercenary Jayne Cobb, has signed on for a Castle guest spot this spring, playing a detective named Ethan Slaughter. Yeah, the writers’ room must be laughing themselves silly on this one. TV Guide describes Slaughter as
a rough and tumble cop from the city’s gang unit who lands a case that Castle is desperate to follow. Along the way, Slaughter shows Castle a dirtier side of police work that forces Castle to reconsider what he’s willing to do to close a case. As the season nears its cliffhanging conclusion, expect this new alliance to place Castle in the line of fire like never before.
It definitely sounds like there’s some parallels to Mal and Jayne, though Castle obviously sticks to the letter of the law more than Mal ever did. Despite the fact that both of the Serenity crew members did unsavory and often illegal jobs, Mal was the one to honor promises, and Jayne was more interested in getting paid, no matter by whom.
I hope some of that tension filters into Nathan and Adam’s interactions in the Castle episode. Especially considering that the last time these two were on-screen together, it gave us one of the best scenes in Firefly‘s short run:
Interestingly, Nathan and Adam both appeared in the final seasons of Joss Whedon‘s hit series in the early ’00s: Nathan played evil preacher Caleb in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7, while Adam appeared on Angel as Wolfram and Hart executive Marcus Hamilton.
I’m so psyched to see these two together again!
