It’s still sometimes jarring to see Emma Watson with her pixie cut, especially if you’re watching the Harry Potter movies with her commentary and seeing curly-haired Hermione Granger on the screen. But there you go—it was a smart career move from the actress to distance herself from her iconic character and play with her style. (After all, she’s only 21.)
However, the press was looking for an ulterior motive when Emma chopped off her locks in 2010. As she told The Independent in a recent profile,
“I had journalists asking me if this meant I was coming out, if I was a lesbian now. That haircut did make me realise how subjective everyone’s opinion is. Some people were crazy for it and some people just thought I’d lost my shit. All I can do is follow my instincts, because I’ll never please everyone.”
Not that it’s anyone’s business, but Emma has been romantically linked with her Perks of Being a Wallflower co-star Johnny Simmons. At the very least, they’re hiking buddies; they’ve been photographed trekking out in the Hollywood hills more than once.
Another interesting quote from the article is when Emma reflected on trying to do normal things in London like catch the tube and go to the post office, but she’ll be besieged by paparazzi:
“Some days, for some reason, I can’t go anywhere and I’m like, ‘That was a mistake,’ and other days no one will even notice me.”
So hopefully she’ll remember that for all the people grasping for a story about her sexuality, there are those who registered the haircut, said, “Nice,” and went on with their lives.
