We’ve all played around with inventing different personas and even unleashing them on friends and family to be funny—but how many of us can say we got guest spots on Nickelodeon and Disney shows, plus a tie-in movie franchise, out of it? Eighteen-year-old Lucas Cruikshank is better known for his infamous YouTube character Fred Figglehorn, a hyperactive six-year-old (later fifteen in the movies) who talks to the camera in a chipmunk voice.
Response to Fred seems to be mixed: You’re either part of the group who made Fred’s page the first YouTube channel to have over one million subscribers, or you hate him. But Lucas is OK with this ambivalence; in interviews he’s said that viewers “automatically love Fred or automatically hate Fred, there is no in between.”
His fame has brought Lucas starring roles in the feature films Fred: The Movie and Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred, as well as acting opposite Miley Cyrus on Hannah Montana and Miranda Cosgrove on iCarly. Plus, he’s got a new comedy series, Fred: The Show. But his alter ego hasn’t suffered: In 2009, Lucas also created his own channel where he could post videos as himself.
