Is It Just Me Or Is It Too Early To Talk About Selena Gomez Marrying Justin Bieber?

So last night I was cruising the Internet superhighway when I came across this article about Justin Bieber possibly giving his girlfriend Selena Gomez a promise ring.  Why is it a promise ring and not just a gift? Because the ring’s a diamond encrusted “J” and after receiving it Selena posted a picture with the caption, “I’m finally home.”

I know there are only two sides to this debate. The Beliebers who wants to murder Selena Gomez while “Baby Baby Baby” plays in the background and the Gomeztin (just made that up on the spot, thoughts?) who want them to get married and live happily ever after.

But here’s the problem. Anyone remember Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears as a (virgin) couple? Tweens everywhere thought they were America’s very own royal couple and look at them now. Or how about Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens? It was all Disney love and Mickey Mouse hearts until Vanessa started leaking naked photos of herself and they broke up. And that’s normal.

Couples who meet (or are set up by PR teams) when they’re teenagers rarely make it to marriage. The period’s an enormous time of growth for everyone involved and I can’t imagine combining that final spurt of puberty with worldwide fame. How can anyone expect two kids to have a normal healthy relationship in that atmosphere.

So it’s fine that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez play kissy face all over the place. It’s almost fine that people take photos of it and other people want to look at those photos. But I don’t think it’s fine that the media keeps acting like they’re about to exchange vows. Bieber is 17. With the exception of Teen Moms, that’s way too young to get married and play house. So if they actually do follow the narrative that the media’s set up for them and go through with a wedding, we all know it will inevitably lead to divorce.

And it’s not like we need any more celebrity divorces. Wasn’t Heidi and Seal’s break-up enough? Do you want to put yourself through that again?

(Also side note, when googling “name for people who want Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez to get married” I came across this Yahoo Answer. Something is telling me the asker does not work for J-14 Magazine.)

Selena got a ring with little diamonds and the initial “J” on it but her quote “I am finally home” had nothing to do with the gift. It referred to being home after a long tour overseas.
