Ever since Juno was a hit, the movie industry’s been scrambling to find the next big quirky girl-centric indie success and I think Damsels in Distress might just be it. With the exception of Adam Brody (I still harbor a crush for Seth Cohen) and Parks and Rec’s Aubrey Plaza, it features a relatively unknown cast. However that doesn’t mean it won’t be a successful film; it received rave reviews at the Toronto and Venice film festivals last year.
The star, Greta Gerwig, (who looks like a young Chloë Sevigny) stars as Violet, the leader of a trio of girls who set out to change the male-dominated atmosphere of their college campus. Although it looks a little dark and a little strange, it also looks like it might be empowering. Not in an in-your-face way, but in a nice story about college women making-a-difference and learning a little about themselves way.
Not to mention it has an All I Wanna Do vibe working for it. Watch the trailer and let me know if you’re excited to see Damsels in Distress when it comes out on April 6th.
