As Tor.com points out, yesterday was Abraham Lincoln‘s 203rd birthday, the perfect occasion for 20th Century Fox to release the first trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The drama — yes, they’re playing it serious — stars Meryl Streep‘s son Benjamin Walker as our 16th President, who battled the undead in addition to slavery and the Civil War.
Based on the tongue-in-cheek book by Seth Grahame-Smith, this retelling has Lincoln facing off against the vampires who killed his mother. As you’ll see in the trailer, just like Buffy Summers has her favorite wooden stake, Abe relies on his trusty axe to fuck up vampires as well as innocent trees. (Just look at that last shot!) Having not read the book, I’m curious to see if the writers try to push the idea of Honest Abe as a normal guy, or if he’s imbued with superhuman strength (that poor tree) like the Slayer.
The movie, produced by Tim Burton, has an awesome cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Abe’s wife Mary Todd Lincoln; Rufus Sewell as vampire leader Adam; and Alan Tudyk, Anthony Mackie, and Dominic Cooper in other supporting roles.
And if summer 2012 seems too far away, you can play the “Are you a patriot or a vampire?” game on the movie’s official Facebook page, complete with a message from Burton. If we’re patriots, does that mean we get cool axes, too?
