With his second film ever being Terms of Endearment, Daniels was off to a good start.
Two films in particular where he did receive nominations for various other awards but not for the Oscar although he really should have: The Purple Rose of Cairo and The Squid and the Whale. In the latter, his overuse of the word "Philistine" should have won him at least something.

If you've never seen Ordinary People, then you're missing out. Sutherland's performance is heart-wrenching as a father who's trying to deal with not only the death of one son, but the depression and suicide attempt of another.
Both the film's director, Robert Redford (it's his directorial debut) and co-star Timothy Hutton (he plays the suicidal son) were nominated for Oscars and won. Sutherland was clearly snubbed that year. It was also yet another year that Scorsese lost the Oscar (to Redford) after having been nominated for Raging Bull.
Other films where Sutherland killed it and was ignored: JFK and Cold Mountain.
I've already expressed my disappointment in the Academy for not giving Beginners the attention it deserves, so I'll put my soapbox away for now.
However I do have one word, one film and an amazing performance in particular for which McGregor absolutely should have been nominated: Trainspotting. 'Nuff said.
As one of the frequent actors who pops up in Coen brothers films and has given an excellent performance every time, it's surprising that Goodman has never received an Oscar nomination for any of them.
This year he finds himself in the Oscar nominated film, The Artist, however again, he is not a contender. But films where he really should have been considered: The Big Lebowski and Barton Fink.
The simple fact that Sheen wasn't nominated for his performance in Apocalypse Now is one of life's great mysteries.
Although one of her most famous roles is that of teenager Stacey Hamilton who gets knocked up in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Leigh has gone on to make a career of playing troubled, dark characters, some of which should not have been overlooked.
Roles that should have landed Leigh recognition for her performance include the films Single White Female, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle and Margot at the Wedding.
Someone get this girl a nomination the next time she plays a worthy badass character, please?
It's shocking Farrow has never been nominated for an Oscar especially for Rosemary's Baby. It's not easy to play a character who spawns the devil.
Other films where Farrow shined and should have been nominated: The Great Gatsby, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters and John and Mary.
While his film Chicago cleaned up at almost all of the award ceremonies that year, Gere wasn't even nominated for his portrayal of Billy Flynn. WTF?
Another movie where he should have been considered: An Officer and A Gentleman. That one is a real tearjerker.
The dude played Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs and didn't get a nomination? Um, OK. He was also ignored for his stellar performances in Fargo and Ghost World. Not cool.
I did mention he was Mr. Pink, right?
Although Lloyd Dobler will always be a sort of ideal in the hearts of us kids who grew up in the 80's and all the generations that will follow, I'm in no way suggesting Cusack should have been nominated for that role in particular (although it was so great and I love it endlessly.)
However, being overlooked for High Fidelity and Being John Malkovich is pretty fucked up.
