Parenting Lessons From Teen Mom 2: Double Punch To The Gut

Chelsea and Randy play with Aubree in "Lean on Me"/"Breaking Point"

CHELSEA

DO: Consider your vanity

I’m split on this one. On the one hand, I thought it was weird that Chelsea was flouncing off to get her hair dyed back to blonde when she obviously doesn’t have a lot of money. But on the other hand, if you’re stressed you want to have the little joys in life, and maybe her friend gave her a discount? That’s why I made this a “do”; it’s worth just evaluating your priorities and finances.

DON’T: Give your kid lip gloss

OK, that crossed a line. It was so weird to see Chelsea jokingly slathering lip gloss on Aubree‘s face; is that stuff even edible?

DON’T: Be unreliable

This is for Adam, who couldn’t be bothered to help his girlfriend and mother of his child move into a new building. He cops an attitude since it’s a Saturday and he just wants to relax; furthermore, he doesn’t even bring any friends even though she was counting on him to. As Chelsea points out, it’s not just for her; it’s for Aubree too.

DO: Get yourself out of the cycle

I have to believe that Chelsea’s former roommate Megan Nelson getting pregnant is partly due to watching her bff Chelsea raise Aubree. That said, Megan does admit that she went off birth control six months ago, which is likely why she and her new boyfriend now have a big surprise on their hands. So this is my first piece of parenting advice for Megan, in case we see her on future seasons of Teen Mom 2: Don’t have a kid just because you think it’ll be fun or you’ll become a reality star. (Fun fact: Megan already gave birth to Hunter John on July 4, 2011.)

DON’T: Be fatalistic

Megan tells Chelsea that she doesn’t like Adam, and is it any surprise when his first reaction to Megan’s pregnancy is predicting that her boyfriend will leave her? Even though he’s operating on his own history, it’s still a shitty thing to say.
