The New Cabin In The Woods Poster Hints At How The Movie Will Skewer Horror Cliches

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard‘s Cabin in the Woods is one of those movies that has languished in development hell for years. Consider that this was supposed to be Chris Hemsworth‘s big break, but in the time between when he shot this and when it’s actually coming out — April 13, 2012 — he’s become a star thanks to Star Trek and of course Thor. So we’ve waited years for a distributor (Lionsgate), a release date, and an idea of what the heck this movie is about.

Well, as Meatloaf would say, two out of three ain’t bad. Ain’t It Cool News got the exclusive chance to debut the poster as well as try to pry some details out of Joss and Drew. What he did learn is that these two plan to really play around with horror-movie tropes, judging by the puzzle-box cabin in the poster above and this synopsis from Lionsgate:

Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen.

If you think you know this story, think again. From fan favorites Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard comes THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out.

Your only other hint is this photo, released about five months ago, of Chris and the rest of the cast. Oh, and the bizarre character names on the IMDb page: A one-armed woman named Patience Buckner, The Ballerina, Zombie, Werewolf Wrangler, Nosferatu, and The Clown. Spooky…

And the release date? It’s a Friday the 13th, of course.
