I learned an awesome thing about Evanna Lynch this weekend: Before she was cast as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies, Evanna herself was a huge fan of J.K. Rowling‘s series. This lent her performance extra nuance, as she was always thinking like her fellow Potterheads.
Although Evanna knows about The Hunger Games books, she didn’t realize that Jackie Emerson – who was cast as the cunning tribute Foxface — was also a fan before she was cast. We caught up with her on the red carpet at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and of course we had to ask what advice she had for Jackie. While filming for The Hunger Games has wrapped, we figured that Jackie could use some pointers in helping to promote the movie and interact with fans. [tagbox tag= "Harry Potter"]
At first Evanna demurred and said, “I don’t want to give advice to her, she’s an actress in her own right,” but we got her to say some more:
The experience is a really unique perspective for me to have, for her to have, because you really appreciate how adored these films are. I’ve always had a completely positive reaction to my performance [from the fans]—that’s one thing that I think is such a privilege to have. She has that advantage from being a fan, from knowing the books so well and knowing the character.
I think that’s what drove me to do a good performance; I would’ve been so upset personally if I had messed up the character. Also, I find that fans really appreciate the fact that I love it so much. The other day I tweeted a picture of myself wearing my Harry Potter gear and they said, “That’s so cool!”
Don’t ever get too far from your fan roots. There’s so much passion to it, which is part of being a fan, and it really motivates you to do great things.
Another example of why fandom is just the best.
