I know that sequels don’t do well — and “fourquels” do even worse — but American Reunion actually looks really funny. The first full-length trailer came out today; it shows that even when your characters are ten years older and you’re dealing with a whole different plot, you can still be funny.
The first American Pie movie was about four virgins trying to become men before graduation; twelve years and three movies later, Jason Biggs and co. are trying to recapture that mystery and excitement of their youth. Though they’ve mostly grown up — Jason’s married to Alyson Hannigan, Eddie Kaye Thomas is a housewife, and Seann William Scott‘s Stifler has an actual job — it just takes one big reunion party to bring back the raucous misadventures.
Well, make that one big reunion party and a bunch of high school parties.
The other promotions have been playing off the sentimentality of getting all these actors together again; this trailer promises us that we’ll still be cringing and laughing at awkward sex and probably more than one poop joke. Also, it’s one of the better uses of Twilight that I’ve seen in a modern movie—acknowledging the crazy trends that have happened in the last decade without being too obvious about it.
Thank God Jim’s dad (Eugene Levy) is back. And if the trailer is anything to be believed, he might be the one to get Stifler’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge) interested in men her own age.
