Gothamist has collected two quotes from Jay-Z and Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin detailing the dynamics of their friendship. (Which we just found out about—over the weekend they chilled in Brooklyn with their respective wives Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow, which must mean they’re BFFs.)
See, if their lives had been different and they hadn’t both become rich, world-famous performers, they might’ve met in a dark alley and one of them wouldn’t have left. As Jay-Z told Metro in 2010,
“I was a different person then. I wasn’t open to the world and to the cultures. I would have been, ‘Yo! Who are you? Give me your money.’ You couldn’t have a guy like Chris walking through Marcy. He’d have to get robbed. At best.”
XXL mentioned the quote to Chris during his interview with them, and he thought it was pretty hilarious:
“He definitely wouldn’t have taken my sneakers because mine were always a lot too dirty for him. I don’t know. He wouldn’t have touched me then. He’s too sweet underneath. I don’t believe that from him.”
Really, it’s so nice to see celebrities playfully ribbing each other, instead of feeding passive-aggressive quotes to tabloids and starting inane little feuds—or publicly dissing each other on Twitter.
This is too cute. They’re like House and Wilson, or some other male friendship based on simmering animosity and genuine affection.
