For the last two years, we’ve watched Giuliana and Bill Rancic‘s struggles with IVF on E!’s Giuliana & Bill, but now we’re being let in on a different aspect of Giuliana’s health: She announced on the Today show this morning that she has been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer.
What’s really surprising is how she found out: Her IVF doctor told her that she should get a mammogram first, because if she did have cancer, the pregnancy hormones would accelerate it. Giuliana wasn’t planning on getting a mammogram til she turned 40 (she’s 37); she admitted that she had to be dragged “kicking and screaming” to get it.
She tells Ann Curry that when the doctors came in and just blurted out that she had cancer, ”It was incredible, instant sobbing. It was like the world just crashed down around me.” She has a surgery this week, and will start a six-week round of radiation right after.
How lucky she is to have found out early in the process—though Giuliana credits a higher power with alerting her to the danger. She believes that’s why the last two rounds of IVF didn’t work (the second ended in a miscarriage when she was eight weeks along): She was meant to go to this doctor who would urge her to get a mammogram.
Speaking about the child that she does plan to have once she goes into remission, she said, “This baby will have saved my life. There’s some master plan. Now I know that [God] was looking out for me.”
