Today, in news of the unexpected! Colombian pop star Shakira, whose hips don’t lie, is to be appointed to an education post in the Obama administration. Specifically, she will sit on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Good for her.
This news may be come as a surprise to those who know her primarily for her sexy music videos, but in addition to all that belly dancing and Grammy winning, Shakira has done quite a bit of education advocacy work. She founded the Barefoot Foundation in 1995 to help fund schools for poor children in Colombia, South Africa, and Haiti, and was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in 2003. She also taught herself English in an incredibly short period of time so she could write English lyrics for her 2002 crossover hit Laundry Service, an experience which could certainly come in handy when strategizing on how best to teach the language to non-native speakers.
Did you know Shakira was this awesome? Well, now you do. Shakira kicks ass.
