Something that USA’s crime comedy Psych does incredibly well is play off the dynamics between the show’s different twosomes. Of course you have fake psychic detective Shawn (James Roday) and his straight-laced partner Gus (Dulé Hill), who are good for laughs when they stumble into impossible situations. But there’s also the duo of junior detective Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson) and her partner Carlton Lassiter.
At the end of last season, Juliet and Shawn started a secret office romance… but in the finale, Lassiter saw them kissing. Considering that he and Juliet have become close partners, he’s hurt that she didn’t tell him about her relationship. So he does the next logical thing: He tricks her into trying out a “faulty” polygraph test in order to get her to spill the beans.
This is the kind of scene that makes Psych a success: It’s irreverent but still makes us care about the characters.
However, it sounds like Shawn has bigger problems on his hands than whether his boss knows about his romance with Juliet. In “Shawn Rescues Darth Vader,” he stumbles across a dead body at the British Consulate Residence in Santa Barbara. Though he tells the SBPD that the vision of the body came to him in a dream, if they find out otherwise it could put his “psychic” powers in jeopardy.
The premiere airs Wednesday, October 12 at 10 p.m. on USA.
