Who knew that bringing The Lion King back to theaters in 3-D form would do so well? With the movie poised to cross $80 million in box office sales today, Disney has just announced that they’re going to re-release four beloved movies — two animated, two of the Disney/Pixar partnership — in 3-D. Obviously this is a ploy to make lightning strike twice (or five times), but we’re the ones who win! Here’s what you can expect in the next two years:
- Beauty and the Beast - January 13, 2012
- Finding Nemo - September 14, 2012
- Monsters, Inc. - January 18, 2013
- The Little Mermaid - September 13, 2013
As Walt Disney Studios president Alan Bergman points out, this will be the first time that many younger viewers even see these movies on the big screen. That in itself is mind-boggling; the first Disney movie I saw in theaters was Aladdin, back in 1992.
Really, you’ll have the chance to shell out $20 bucks a pop for each of these, considering how far apart Disney is spacing the releases. But we’re still curious…
