Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967)
Before it was a hit Broadway musical—and a vehicle for thoroughly modern Broadway baby Sutton Foster– Thoroughly Modern Millie was a 1967 musical film starring Julie Andrews as the titular Millie. Somehow, this showstopper manages to cover everything from romance to kidnapping and still have it all make sense. And of course, Julie’s glorious voice carries it through from beginning to end.
A woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman? How meta! And also how progressive, especially for the time. Who would’ve thought that prim and proper Julie Andrews would make one helluva drag queen?
The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2 (2001 – 2004)
I can’t think of anyone better to teach a girl how to be a princess than Julie. Maybe the Royal Family should send Kate Middleton to her—I hear she could use the practice. I also love that The Princess Diaries 2 found a way to utilize Julie’s, Anne Hathaway’s, and Raven Symoné’s musical skills. Way to make the most of what you’ve got!
