Two New Promos For ‘The Office’ Season Eight Are Cheesy, Tell Us Nothing

When I woke up to find that NBC had released two new promos for season eight of The Office, I did a little happy dance. Was James Spader going to be the new boss? Was his presence finally going to push Dwight over the edge? GIVE ME A HINT.

Unfortunately, the two nearly identical promos don’t use any footage from the new season. Also, they’re kind of cheesy. It’s jarring to see The Office promoted like any other sitcom, with jazzy soundtrack and zippy soundbites, when its comedy normally operates via long, awkward takes. Then again, it only makes Spader’s presence even more incongruous. I don’t know about you, but when I watched James Spader invade Dunder MIfflin (sorry–Sabre) with his spooky brand of quiet, profound intensity last season, my roommate and I looked at each other like, “OMG, is this really happening?” To take it a step further and stick him in a sitcom context…well, that’s bound to be the weirdest sitcom anyone’s ever seen.

Anyway, these promos are infuriatingly coy, but I guess that’s kind of the point. The season doesn’t premiere until September 22, and it looks like we’ll have to wait until then to find out anything about it. Team Spader!
