About a month ago, it came out that Marvel Comics was tossing around the idea of producing a series of short films centered around a handful of its less-familiar characters. And hey, guess what? They’ve already made a couple of them! It turns out that these one-shots are less about spotlighting obscure characters and more about filling in some of the gaps of the upcoming epic The Avengers. The two shorts that have already been shot featured S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson (Gregg Clark), who you may recall popping up occasionally in other recent Marvel films like Iron Man (he’s the guy who attempts to debrief Tony Stark on Stark’s escape from Afghanistan) and Thor (here, he commandeers Thor’s hammer and then helps himself to Jane Foster’s research). Here’s a clip from the first one, “The Consultant,” which will appear in full on the DVD/Blu-ray release of Thor in September:
So what the hell is going on here? Well, it looks like this conversation is happening post-Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. The debrief they’re talking about might result in General “Thunderbolt” Ross releasing Emil Blonsky, otherwise known as the Abomination– the villain played by Tim Roth in The Incredible Hulk. Naturally, this is something Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. buddy would like to avoid, so what better way to get around it than to sabotage the debrief by sending in someone who will annoy the hell out of Ross? Given Coulson’s description of the perfect man for the job and the fact that the end of Iron Man2 establishes Tony Stark as a consultant for the Avengers Initiative, I think we can safely assume that Coulson is talking about Stark himself. Any other questions we’ve got, we’re going to remain in the dark about for a bit longer; but I’m perfectly content to sit in happy anticipation for a while, because The Avengers looks like it’s going to be awesome.
Oh, also, the second of the two one-shots is apparently called “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer,” a title which happens to be a riff on the title of the Stephen Sondheim musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Sounds like fun!
