The A Cinderella Story franchise has its starlets passing the torch as each does her time in the most treasured of fairy tales, then moves on to bigger projects. First it was Hilary Duff, then Selena Gomez, and now Lucy Hale — who you know from ABC Family’s guilty-pleasure show Pretty Little Liars. Each time, the frame story is the same: Teenage girl works as a slave to her stepmother and stepsisters, all the while dreaming of escaping to college and/or Hollywood. Hale’s movie A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song is similar to Gomez’s in that the main character is an aspiring singer (compared to a dancer). Oh, and the glass slipper is always a cell phone.
The pseudo-sequel doesn’t come out on DVD til September 6, but here are the first few minutes of the movie. Foster care survivor Katie (Hale) literally dreams of becoming a popstar; in this clip, she sings the first song from the soundtrack, “Run This Town.” And yes, that is Megan Park — a.k.a. Grace on The Secret Life of the American Teenager — as Katie’s ugly stepsister.
If you want to know more about the real world that Katie tries to escape from, then check out the first four minutes of the movie on the official Facebook page. What you don’t get to see in either clip is Freddie Stroma as the hot, blond, English Prince Charming. We interviewed him last month, and will be posting that as we get closer to the movie’s release date.
