Teen Mom star Maci Bookout – whose episode of 16 and Pregnant was the show’s pilot – almost became a maternity model. Maci tells Time Magazine that her mom was scouring Craigslist looking for “pregnancy modeling” jobs for Maci when she stumbled upon a casting call for the show. The rest, as they say, is reality TV history.
So is maternity modeling a thing? I asked my colleague Koa Beck, who is the editor of our sister site Mommyish.com. She says that while there are models who book jobs for maternity catalogues and the like, they’re not almost never pregnant women. Normally, they are regular models who just wear pregnancy bellies. That happens for a couple of reasons: because these shoots are often booked far in advance, because it’s hard to predict what is going to happen to the rest of the woman’s proportions, and because the maternity clothes only come in one sample size and the model will have to be able to fit into it. So, there’s your answer! If not for Maci, I never would have even known that maternity modeling existed. Farrah Abraham is going to be so jealous, you guys.
