Bloody Disgusting has the first shot from Drew Goddard‘s long-delayed film The Cabin in the Woods. A writer on Buffy and the man behind the Cloverfield script, Goddard co-wrote Cabin with Joss Whedon, and it was supposed to be released three years ago by MGM. Then the company went bankrupt, and the movie’s been languishing in boring development hell — not the fun kind of hell we can only presume the story explores.
In the pic, you’ll see most of the main cast: Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy), Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), and two lesser-known girls who will probably get whacked. What exactly they’re looking at, we’re not sure — but since this is a twist on the “cabin in the woods” trope, it could follow a cult it like Cabin Fever and be supernatural, or go the entirely human route a la The Strangers. Because of the talent involved, I’d actually prefer to see Whedon and Goddard’s take on a serial killer instead of another demon or spirit. But either way, I’d be happy. The movie also stars Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and another Whedonverse alum, Angel‘s Amy Acker.
The best we can do to get this released is to throw our support in one place: The movie’s Facebook fan page. Here’s hoping that Lionsgate will be willing to bet on Hemsworth as a reliable lead, and Goddard’s script — which was arguably the most compelling part of Cloverfield. Fingers crossed that this movie could come out in October and fill the empty slot left by the end of the Saw franchise.
