What to Expect from the ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ Movie

Remember when I predicted which holidays movie studios would go after for the latest Valentine’s Day clones? Consider me flummoxed: The bigwigs seem to have completely bypassed Thanksgiving/other festivities and have moved on to Big Moments in Your Life as the latest gimmick for the ensemble romantic comedy. Case in point: Lionsgate is developing What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the bestselling how-to book for new moms, into a feel-good tale of modern women linked by the fetuses growing in their bellies.

The official synopsis does little to keep us from giggling at the fact that Hollywood is turning yet another self-help book into a legitimate scripted movie:

The film is a modern look at love through the eyes of four interconnected couples experiencing the thrills and surprises of having a baby, and ultimately coming to understand the universal truth that no matter what you plan for, life doesn’t always deliver what’s expected.

Although I’m sure we’re going to get separate character-specific trailers and posters a la Bridesmaids, already we have descriptions for most of the lead roles:

  • Holly (Jennifer Lopez) and her husband adopt a baby while abroad because they have difficulty conceiving. The producers could have a lot of fun lampooning various celebrity moms who’ve made the same choice, including Angelina Jolie and Madonna.
  • Skyler (Brooklyn Decker) seems to have everything come to her easily: She’s married to a much older guy and seems to sail through pregnancy with neither morning sickness nor financial worries, despite the fact that she’s carrying twins.
  • Rosie (Anna Kendrick) has a pretty adorable meet-cute with her soon-to-be babby daddy: They’re old flames who reunite when their favorite food trucks declare a turf war. But when birth control fails, they’re the couple faced with a surprise pregnancy.
  • Cameron Diaz is in this movie too, but no word on her character’s name or quirk.
