O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light / What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming… What’s so difficult about that? Just in time for Independence Day, Parade Magazine is suggesting that we switch out “The Star-Spangled Banner” with “America the Beautiful” for our country’s anthem, because of all the idiots who keep messing it up.
Maybe it’s the “intricate” lyrics about a naval battle; maybe it’s the pressure linked to the honor of belting out the anthem at baseball, hockey, and football games; or maybe you can actually cross-reference “getting chosen to sing” with “lacking brain cells.” Regardless, if you’re horrified at possibly losing Francis Scott Key‘s lyrics, you can thank these guys.
The latest and perhaps most grievous offender (at this year’s Super Bowl), the pop star made two mistakes: She crooned the anthem like one of her love songs, and she came up with the line “At the twilight’s last reaming,” which sounds like an uncomfortable experience with Stephenie Meyer‘s books. On the bright side, it created a hilarious meme.
