Tony Awards: How’d Everyone Do On Those Predictions?

I may not have entered an awards pool, but I DID make a few predictions. How’d I do? How’d all of YOU do, Crushable readers? Let’s check out the final tally:

BEST ACTOR IN A PLAY
I said: Al Pacino
Who won: Mark Rylance
This man is amazing. He previously won in 2008 for Boeing-Boeing; he was seen on Broadway earlier this season in La Bete with Joanna Lumley; and he was one of the most fascinating Hamlets I’ve ever seen at Shakespeare’s Globe a good ten years ago. He’s delightful. And also delightfully strange. Glad to have been wrong about this one!

BEST ACTRESS IN A PLAY
I said: Lily Rabe
Who won: Frances McDormand
And wearing a wacky denim jacket, nonetheless!

BEST LEADING ACTOR IN A MUSICAL
I said: Josh Gad
Who won: Norbert Leo Butz
VERY glad to have been wrong about this one! I remember watching him win his first one in 2005, and he’s just as gracious about it now as he was then.

BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL
I said: Sutton Foster
Who won: Sutton Foster
Natch.

BEST FEATURED ACTOR IN A PLAY
I said: John Benjamin Hickey
Who won: John Benjamin Hickey
Let’s pair this one with…

BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A PLAY
I said: Ellen Barkin
Who won: Ellen Barkin
I thought The Normal Heart would probably sweep the acting awards; it took the featured ones, which is still pretty good!

BEST FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL
I said: John Larroquette
Who won: John Larroquette
Well, at least How to Succeed took home something.

BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL
I said: Laura Benanti
Who won: Nikki M. James
Awww, good for her! She totally wasn’t expecting it, either.

BEST REVIVAL OF A PLAY
I said: The Normal Heart
What won: The Normal Heart
Not a surprise.

BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL
I said: Anything Goes
What won: Anything Goes
Also not a surprise.

BEST PLAY
I said: Jerusalem
What won: War Horse
This is one that I was really, really glad to be wrong about. There was a lot of incredible theatre this year, especially in the straight play category, and both are wonderful; but War Horse was such a unique event that it gives me a little more faith in the world to know that it won the big award. Hoorah!

BEST MUSICAL
I said: The Book of Mormon
What won: The Book of Mormon
Not a surprise, but hoorah!
