Someone Pretended to Be ‘Game of Thrones’ Actress Emilia Clarke on Reddit

Earlier today, it looked as if British actress Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on HBO’s Game of Thrones, was the latest celebrity to create an account on Reddit and launch an AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread. Embracing male fans’ adoration of her lovely character, she delighted Redditors by coming up with snappy, knowledgeable answers about the medieval series. Perhaps too knowledgeable: A user named nitrousconsumed, who had previously verified Clarke’s account, just announced that it was a fake.

In typical Reddit fashion, some of the responses marked “best” were the ones that immediately made Game of Thrones jokes about the situation, but not everyone was laughing. Most of the users are flabbergasted that someone took the time and effort to impersonate this actress — going so far as to fabricate an EU identity card — and waste everyone’s time with fake answers. There’s a difference between a two-second joke and keeping an AMA thread going for hours. Redditor ProbablyHittingOnYou quipped, I really do think it’s sad. I waste all of my time on Reddit and even I pity someone who wastes their time like that.

It was the official Game of Thrones Twitter account that broke the news that Clarke’s account was fake; and nitrousconsumed reports that Clarke’s publicist says, “She is a very private person and is not active on Social Networking Sites.” A geek dream dies!

Redditor nitesmoke summed up how disappointing these fakes can be:

Of course it’s sad. What’s sadder are the people who don’t care if AMAs are fake as long as they were “entertained.”
I think this was the final nail in the coffin for IAMA. We simply cannot trust that any posts are real. Hell, even when we do have a real celebrity AMA, it turns out just to be an advertisement for the celebrities newest project, ie the guy who played Ned from Groundhog Day.

IAMA is now ruled by trolls and idiots who would rather be spoon fed a lie they like than the truth they hate. People will mindlessly upvote AMAs that agree with their pre-conceived world views, such the fake AMA from the guy who met a Fox News exec at a bar who admitted Fox was bought and paid for by Republicans, despite the fact that the entire post was fishy as hell. Not to mention the legion of white knights who downvoted the guy who fisr called bullshit on all of this. How dare this insensitive asshole question someone who is so hot?

r/IAMA is dead. It’s time to unsubscribe.

We won’t let one troll ruin AMAs, as they’re incredibly fun. (Check out our favorites in the related links below.) Although it’s tough to do thanks to the built-in cynicism of the Internet, people have to hold on to the trust that in many cases, it is the actor/singer/author you admire who’s taking the time to interact with fans.

Of course, the question is whether this was a woman jealous of Clarke’s beauty and popularity, or a man who is nursing a more-devoted-than-normal crush on the star… Regardless, Redditors mostly seem to be over it: They’ve requested that Thrones co-star Peter Dinklage do an AMA.
