Late on Monday, April 30, a video appeared on YouTube from a person who claims to have hacked the Fox News ticker on 6th Avenue in New York. The message reads:
WE ARE BEING LIED TO. RIGHTWINGERS ARE DESTROYING THE MIDDLE CLASS AND TRYING TO KILL OUR UNIONS. THE COUNTRY IS NOT BROKE. WE ARE THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. USA IS TWICE AS RICH AS CHINA. OUR ECONOMY IS BIGGER THAN MOST OF EUROPE COMBINED. WE ARE NOT BROKE. WE ARE BEING LIED TO. WE WILL RISE UP. WE WILL FIGHT BACK. WE WILL SPREAD THE TRUTH.
And of course, the question that immediately comes to mind is: Is this a hoax? Check out the video below and take a look for yourselves:
Now, I don’t know about you guys, but my gut reaction is that it’s viral marketing of some kind. Remember that story back in March about the guy who supposedly managed to hack the digital displays in Times Square using only an iPhone, a weather balloon, a transmitter, and something called a “video repeater?” Yep, that one was a hoax created by the company ThinkModo as a viral ad campaign for the movie Limitless. Granted, the Fox News ticker stunt has a much more serious bent to it due to its strong political message– but at the same time, the whole “WE WILL RISE UP. WE WILL FIGHT BACK” thing sounds rather like something out of a movie. Plus, the little pop-up instructing us to go to june23rd.org sounds like exactly the sort of thing viral marketing likes to do. I can’t help but think that on June 23, whatever “all” is going to be “revealed” will be a trailer for a movie or something.
Maybe I’m wrong. If I am, come June 23, I’ll gladly eat my words, and because I am an unapologetic, raging liberal, I applaud you, hackers, for going after the travesty that is Fox News. Until then, though, I remain skeptical (sorry; we live in a world where viral marketing is the norm). What do you guys think? Did the Fox News ticker really get hacked, or is this just some sort of publicity stunt?
Sorry! This poll is now closed.
