Comedian and author Chelsea Handler has a new book out called Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me, and – as usual – she’s not pulling any punches. Though she’s far from the only celebrity to criticize 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom, she does have a very interesting reason for not liking the shows. “I had an abortion when I was 16. Because that’s what I should have done. Otherwise I would now have a 20-year-old kid,” she told the New York Times. “Anyway, those are things that people shouldn’t be dishonest about it … People are too P.C. We need to be focusing on other things. We’re seeking out such grossness in human behavior and want such mindless entertainment. The Real Housewives of Atlanta and some of these other shows are more racist. Or 16 and Pregnant. Getting rewarded for being pregnant when you’re a teenager? Are you serious? I mean, that makes me want to kill somebody.”
While I don’t think that 16 and Pregnant glorifies teen pregnancy – it actually makes most of the girls’ lives look pretty shitty, what with their deadbeat parents and uninvolved boyfriends and the ruination of OMGSENIORYEAR – I see what Chelsea’s saying. The shows themselves aren’t the problem as much as the fact that the Teen Moms have become celebrities. The fact that Leah Messer has paparazzi taking pictures of her going to the grocery store as if she were Jennifer Garner is pretty weird, to say the least. But while it’s commendable that Chelsea is speaking out against sexism and racism on TV, she might want to watch her own show once in awhile – I’m sure she thinks that it’s hilarious to make jokes about her assistant, Chuy Bravo, for being a little person, but I disagree.
